Chiswell Green is AL2, a suburb in St Stephen parish south-west of the city, cut off from the St Albans side by the A414, with the North Orbital Road and junction 21A of the M25 close by. It filled out between the wars and in the years just after, so most of what we clean here is houses of that age. It was also home to the Royal National Rose Society’s gardens, which reopened as the Gardens of the Rose in 2007 and closed in 2017. A fitting neighbour for moth talk
The Royal Entomological Society has had its headquarters in the Mansion House on Chiswell Green Lane since 2007, which is as good an excuse as any to mention the insect that matters most to anyone with a wool carpet. Carpet moth larvae graze in the dark, under beds and along the skirting behind furniture that never moves. You tend to see bare patches and a fine sandy grit long before you see a moth. Vacuuming right to the edges does more than any spray, and when we clean a carpet and find grazing, we show you on the day. A clean lifts larvae and debris out of the pile. It cannot put back pile that has been eaten.

Carpets booked alongside cost £29 a bedroom and £36 for the living room, so an agreement that names professional carpet cleaning is covered on the same day.
